What Happened
On the morning of Jan. 7, 2026, Renee Good, 37, was in her SUV on a residential street in Minneapolis after dropping her 6-year-old son off at school. She encountered ICE agents, including officer Jonathan Ross, during a larger federal immigration enforcement surge underway in the Twin Cities. Video of the encounter shows Good turning her steering wheel away from Ross as she began to drive off, with agents on foot near the car.
Multiple gunshots followed, and her SUV crashed into a parked vehicle.
A private autopsy commissioned by Good’s family found she was shot three times — in her left forearm, her right breast, and her head, with the fatal shot entering near her left temple and exiting the right side — along with a separate graze wound. On Jan. 22, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office classified her death as a homicide. The office’s full autopsy report has not been made public.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said Good tried to “weaponize her vehicle” against the agents and that Ross fired in self-defense; a DHS spokesperson said Good had ignored agents’ commands and called her death “entirely preventable.” Good’s attorneys and local officials, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Gov. Tim Walz, disputed that account. The FBI has opened an investigation into the shooting but Minnesota state officials say they’ve been barred from participating in it.
