What Happened
On Sept. 12, 2025, Villegas González, 38, was driving to his kitchen job in Franklin Park after dropping his two young sons at school and daycare when two ICE agents in an unmarked car pulled him over. Neither agent had a body camera on, despite ICE policy requiring one. The agents approached his car on both sides; when he reversed away and then drove forward into open traffic, an agent fired twice. His car rolled roughly 170 feet before crashing into a parked truck. He was pronounced dead within the hour, shot once in the back of the neck.
DHS’s Account vs. the Evidence
DHS said Villegas González had “resisted arrest” and dragged an agent “a significant distance.”
But body-camera video from a responding police officer shows the agent himself describing his injuries as “nothing major.” Investigators also found no evidence Villegas González was armed, suspected of a violent crime, or driving erratically. It is also noted the agents’ own choices, like reaching into his car and standing beside it as it moved, escalated the danger.
Villegas González is survived by his partner and two sons, ages 3 and 7. His body was returned to Michoacán, Mexico, where he had family members.
